About Us
Pharmasset is a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company committed to discovering, developing and commercializing novel drugs to treat viral infections. Our primary focus is on the development of oral therapeutics for the treatment of hepatitis C virus, or HCV. A secondary focus for us is the development of Racivir, for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV. Our research and development efforts focus on a class of compounds known as nucleoside analogs, which act to inhibit the natural enzymes required for viral replication.

Responsibilities
  • Initiate the design, synthesis, purification, and characterization of bioactive compounds for treatment of viral diseases.
  • Design and synthesize compounds for testing as antiviral agents against key Pharmasset biological targets.
  • Partner with internal team members, including leading project teams related to company’s antiviral discovery efforts.
  • Analyze biological data to make decisions on direction of medicinal chemistry effort within the lab.
  • Present research results at chemistry and project team meetings.
  • Participate in the preparation of patents and publications.
  • Maintain awareness of research in the field of medicinal chemistry and current findings in area of research focus, as well as work being done by competitor labs.
  • Develop and present new ideas for review and consideration by management.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, or bioorganic chemistry required.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years experience in a medicinal chemistry role within a drug discovery organization required. Previous experience in infectious disease drug discovery a plus.
  • Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge relevant to their field of science and breadth of knowledge of related fields critical to the drug discovery process.
  • Possess strong small molecule synthetic organic chemistry skills, with the ability to independently plan and execute synthetic strategies to accomplish synthesis of target molecules
  • Ability to think creatively and develop innovative solutions to problems.
  • Demonstrate the broad technical knowledge necessary to identify and use both traditional and non-traditional tools to efficiently advance a drug discovery program.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to work in a dynamic research environment.
  • Ability to make convincing written and oral presentations in order to champion ideas and programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, manage multiple priorities, exercise sound judgement, be well organized, take initiative, be flexible, work well under pressure and produce accurate and timely work.
